Organizers of Detroit’s auto show which takes place annually have set a special space in the convention center basement for a 700-foot-long oval driving track to display zero emissions vehicles. The track area is called the “Michigan EcoXperience”.

The track, which passes through a forest of about 100 Michigan maple, birch and pine trees and around 2 ponds with waterfalls, will allow automakers to showcase electric vehicles and other zero emission technology for more than 6,000 journalists signed up to attend the show’s press days.

Journalists participating during the preview days, which start Sunday, will be able to drive cars on the track, but the public will only be allowed to ride with professional drivers. The speed limit will  be a 10 mph, and crash barriers will be installed just in case.

General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., Mitsubishi Motors, Tesla Motors Inc. and others will provide electric vehicles. Space became available when several auto manufacturers moved to the main floor in space vacated mainly by Nissan Motor Co. and Porsche Cars North America, which will not particpate in the Detroit show.
