Video Game Sales Still Strong
The video gaming industry is not suffering the brunt of the recession, as shown by February’s double-digit year-over-year growth. Nintendo Wii’s gaming system is ahead with 753,000 units sold. The handheld Nintendo DS, selling 588,000 units, came in second. Revenue from video game hardware climbed 11% to $532.7 million from $481.4 million, according to market researcher NPD Group. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold 391,000 units, which is an increase of 53% from last year, while Sony’s PlayStation 3 sold 276,000 units.
Nintendo also had the best-selling game in February with its “Wii Fit,” selling 644,000 copies. Capcom USA’s “Street Fighter IV” was in the number 2 and 3 spots, with 446,000 copies for the Xbox version and 403,000 for the Play Station 3 version. Overall software sales increased by 9% to $733.5 million from $673.3 million. However, in keeping with the recession, the average price of video games dropped about 4% year-over-year.
