Teen drivers account for an unproportionally high amount of those involved in road accidents, and as so, many states have implemented cell-phone bans on novice drivers. Of course, as teenagers will often revel, those laws are not always adhered to. Also, what if you have a child driving in a state which allows them to talk and drive?

A few companies are currently promoting products to answer just such a question, with some interesting technology. One of these companies is Aegis Mobility, out of Canada, who is set to offer a system called “DriveAssistT” which will disable phones when a passanger is travelling at a high speed (like that of a car). It relies on GPS technology, and unfortunately will block the user’s cellphone from operating whether they are the driver or a passanger in such a vehicle.

Personally, I wonder if this limit on technology is the best way to teach our teens the responsibility of safe driving. However, no doubt it could save many lives. What do you think, is this a fair use of GPS technology, and would you implement it on your teens’ phones?
