Special Coating Self-Repairs Scratches
A a new polyurethane vehicle coating developed by researchers from the University of Southern Mississippi, can make paint stratches disappear in an hour. The process requires sunlight. The coating is 99.99% standard polyurethane, a material found in a various products, including soft foams and hard plastic. The remaining 0.01% is either a 4-molecule oxetane ring or a long rod of chitosan. Chitosan is related to chitin, the environmentally friendly tough material found in the shells of lobsters and crabs. Long-term testing prior to application to products will be necessary. Beyond car paint, many other products that could scratch are potential candidates for an application of this technology. The research is described in the current issue of the journal Science.
