Sony Ordered To Pay Up
Sony BMG Music Entertainment has accepted an agreement which requires the company to ante up one million dollars in order to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC alleged that Sony had unlawfully compiled and exposed personal data connected to 1000s of minors without their parents’ permission.
The FTC stated Thursday that the civil punishment is the heaviest ever to be handed down in a case which alleges encroachment of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The FTC claims that Sony Music broke rules pertaining to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act on over 196 of their websites.
The FTC ruling calls for Sony Music to erase all private data accumulated and preserved in encroachment of the rule. For the following 5 years, Sony must also display links to Federal Trade Commission consumer education information on the websites charged.
