The world’s first vessel that is partially propelled by solar energy has now set sail, with the goal to cut back fuel costs as well as greenhouse gas emissions.

The 200-meter freighter, made in Japan, and called the Auriga Leader, weighs about 60,000 tonnes, and is the world’s first large watercraft with a propulsion system that incorporates solar energy.

The ship bears 328 solar panels, which supply enough energy to meet .2 percent of the ships energy requirements. While this may not sound like much, it’s a good start, as this will be the first concrete test of whether solar panels are a feasible option for power on tumultuous freighter shipboards.
