Sanyo takes a step in the green direction by unleashing a hybrid-electric bike that will begin retailing in February. The bicycle contains a rechargeable battery, and uses energy from the bike’s functions (such as braking) to aid the user in riding.

The result is that the rider will be assisted in such tasks as climbing hills, and riding faster. In fact, Sanyo claims that the bike will be able to increase the rider’s pedal power three-fold, in order to make riding more pleasant.

They are marketing the device as a mix between a regular bicycle and a moped, looking to tap into a growing consumer-base of eco-concerned commuters.

The bike will initially only be available in Japan, and will retail for the equivalent of approximately $1400 US dollars. If successful, its expected to migrate to overseas markets.
