Polaroid to Offer Digital Camera
Although Polaroid stopped making film cameras last year, a digital replacement is about to be introduced. Polaroid has announced Thursday at the International Consumer Electronics Show that it is debuting a digital camera that produces prints right on the spot. The prints will not appear instantaneously, but take nearly a minute to appear, which is the same time it took the old film prints to develop.
In essence, the $200 US PoGo is a camera that contains a built-in color printer. It can poduce 2×3 inch photos by selectively heating spots on a specially treated paper. It has nothing to do with the old chemical Polaroid process, but the prints convey some of the same Pop Art appeal; being grainy and the colors are slightly off, with faces showing a deathly blue-green.
The camera is scheduled to go on sale in late March or early April and is a replacement to a stand-alone printer Polaroid that was introduced last summer, designed for camera phones and digital cameras.
