The country of Egypt has just sustained a heavy Internet outage after cables in the Mediterranean sea floor were severed, as described by the country’s Communications Ministry. 3 Internet cables were damaged off of Sicily’s coast on Friday morning, the ministry announced in a statement. The cause of the cut wasn’t known. Throughout Egypt, the Internet is virtually entirely down or working periodically. The ministry stated that  it will take “several days” for the cables to be repaired and is attempting to switch the country’s Internet connection to an alternate path through Asia meanwhile.

This was the second large Internet outage in Egypt in 2008. Undersea cables were also damaged in January, causing outages in both the Mideast and India. The countries of Yemen and Sudan were also experiencing telephone and Internet trouble on Friday due to the cable being cut.
