Google Improving its Mobile Search
Google recently introduced visual search results for the iPhone and T-Mobile G1 Android gadgets. Mobile users could be searching Google search through the search widget on the G1’s home screen, the search field in the iPhone’s Safari browser, or Google.com on either device, and the search results are optimized for their specific device.
The Users do not have to scroll back and forth or zoom in, and additionally the pages should load more quickly. Google also added touchscreen-friendly buttons and expandable maps for local business search queries.
The improved search-results pages are presently available in U.S. English for Android and for iPhone and iPod touch devices with firmware 2.x. Users can choose to view desktop-style search-result pages by selecting the “classic” link at the bottom of any page. iPhone customers can also choose to change their default Internet browser to Yahoo. There are three or more times as many mobile phones than PCs in the world, and mobile phones would the ‘primary Internet device’ by 2020. This is already the case in certain countries. This report from a week ago also predicts voice-recognition and touch interfaces will become more prevalent and accepted by 2020. Google has an investment in both voice recognition and touch interfaces.
Google is expecting its traffic dramatically increase from mobile phones and smartphones and indirectly increase its monetization opportunities. Google’s competitors, Yahoo and Microsoft, are making similar moves. In fact, If another competitor was dominant when it came to the mobile search Google’s position could be vulnerable over time.
