Some news about the G1 is out, and frankly, while it’s perhaps a necessary move from Google, I can see it being exploited buy many. You see, Google is now allowing its app developers to by unlocked G1 phones directly from them, in the hopes that it will spur more applications to be created for the device.

Normally, the G1 is only available from T-Mobile, and is locked, requiring a T-mobile contract for use.

The new device, while intended only for developers is approximately the same price as the T-mobile G1, but is of course, unlocked. As well, there are no software restrictions in place, as developers would need to load data onto the phone to test out their creations.

To register to become a developer it only costs $25 (US) dollars, so as far as I can tell, there is little to stop regular consumers from registering as developers in order to buy the G1 phone unlocked.
