Electronic Arts Asked to Pull a Wii Ad
Electronic Arts, one of the largest computer game publishers, has been ordered to stop a TV ad that portrays Tiger Woods playing Nintendo Wii golfing as it is deceptive. The ad features Woods playing PGA Tour 09 with a Wii controller, but the graphics shown in the commercial are from the Xbox 360 version of the game. A viewer complained to UK Advertising Standards Authority that the ad led people to think that the 360 graphics were achievable on the Wii. A logo of the Wii, which was displayed at the end of the commercial reinforced the idea, the complaint said, in spite of a message that said “available on all formats.”
The advertising regulator went with with the viewer’s complaint and ordered Electronic Arts to halt broadcasting the ad in its current form. EA argued that using the actual Wii graphics would not have been “broadcast quality” and that its advertising agency advised using Xbox 360 pictures instead, supplemented by text describing that the game was available on all formats.
The Advertising Standards Authority is an industry self-regulating body, can impose its rulings by forcing media outlets to deny ads from wrongdoers or by citing cases to the British government for fines or other legal action.
