1st Car to Complete Trip Around the World
The first solar-powered car to travel around the world had finished its trip at the UN climate talks, delivering the message that clean technology is now ready to stop global warming.
The 2-seater er was hauling a trailer of solar cells and brought the chief United Nations climate official Yvo de Boer to the conference in Poland.
This was a 52,000-kilometre journey that began 17 months ago in Lucerne, Switzerland, and took Louis Palmer through 38 countries. Palmer is a 36 year old school teacher and adventurer from Switzerland.
The car can reach 90 km/h and cover 300 kilometres on a fully charged battery. Only 2 days were lost during the trip due to car breakdown.
During the journey, Palmer has given rides to approximately 1000 people, such as officials including Michael Bloomberg and UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon as well as regular individuals.
The participants of the UN climate conference are trying to draft a new climate treaty that would replace the Kyoto protocol, which expires in 2012 . The Kyoto protocol has required that 37 countries reduce emissions of heat-trapping gases by an average 5% from 1990 levels. The goal is to finalize a new treaty by he next UN climate meeting in December 2009 which will take place in Copenhagen
